Farming on a Farm?

We started laying out plans this week to move our chickens to the farm. As you know, on most horse farms, there is a lot of manure usually piled around all over the place looking for someone to pick it up. We’ve decided that we’re going to use the Chickens to help turn the waste into fertilizer for our gardens.

We already know chicken manure is extremely good for fertilizer and horse manure isn’t bad. Why not combine them for an even better alternative. So, we’re laying out 2 long pens that we plan to stack with manure from our stalls so that the chickens can use them for scratch areas. As they do so, they’ll deposit their own additives to the pile and within 6 months it should be ready to use as compost for our gardens and for selling to others to use for their gardens.

In addition to the chickens, we’re laying out an area for a garden and plan to set up classes to teach kids how to grow their own gardens and prepare the food for canning. We’re still setting up the curriculum but will provide more details here once we’re ready.

And of course, no farm would be complete without some cows and goats. We have a pasture at the very back of our property that we’re working on cross fencing so that we can start a small operation raising a few other types of animals. Stay tuned for the progress on these projects as we’ll post here as we progress.
