Well, Ethan finally broke down and purchased himself his very own and very first horse. He’s been a huge help around the farm with training and riding horses and he finally decided to get himself his very own project to start working with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He found a nice 3-year-old (via pictures and talk) in South Carolina. Everyone thought the pictures looked awesome and all the questions were being answered, so he pulled the trigger. Next up was scheduling the 4-1\/2 hour drive each way to go get her. That came yesterday with us just jumping in the truck and heading out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we arrived at the barn where we were to pick her up, things started looking a little sketchy though. Most all the horses were in the pasture with only a few in the barn (not including the one we were picking up). This was a bit of a surprise given that she knew we were coming. The next thing that worried us was that every horse we saw looked like it hadn’t been fed very well and was pretty nasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we were going along talking to the girl selling her, the story turned to her supposedly owning nothing but horses coming from the kill barn as she called it. This started to worry us because we were confused as to how she had so much information on Ethan’s horse if she had just bought it from such a place. She also had advertised that the horse had 30 days of training but it hadn’t been ridden in a few weeks and her feet clearly needed trimming. Things were getting more and more sketchy as we went on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We don’t have any pictures of the place or the condition she came out looking like, but it wasn’t great. I was surprised that the girl hadn’t taken the time to even wash her before we showed up. She was covered in black mud and manure and was wormy-looking and skinny. She was also much smaller than we’d expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were almost on the way out the door, but Jacob said she was begging for help, and you could almost see it in her eyes. She was very sweet and we finally got the girl to come down on the price enough that we decided to bring her home. We laughed half the way back about the entire situation and how Ethan had bought a baby horse, but in the end, we all thought he’d made the right decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once we arrived back, 10 hours later, we took her from the trailer, straight to the wash rack. She very much loved the attention, and the bath and even liked water sprayed on her face and head. At one point she had 4 people all around her giving her a bath and she never once acted like she wanted to leave. A+ for a 3-year-old that has a good head on her shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the end, I think Ethan made a good choice and the horse will be forever grateful to him for saving her. She’s obviously not had the best of life and she’ll be treated like a queen at Caney Creek. After all the laughs were had at Ethan’s expense, he had a great attitude about getting her started and turning her into an awesome horse.
